The Namibian sevens rugby team missed out on a medal at the African Youth Games in Gaborone, when they lost to Zimbabwe 22:14 in the bronze medal match.
The Blits Warriors had a good start to the tournament when they beat hosts Botswana 33:7 in their first group match on Friday. In the following group matches Namibia were defeated by Zimbabwe 14:5 and then came back to beat Tunisia 31:7.
Finishing second in Group B, Namibia were up against South Africa in the semi final on Saturday morning. The southern neighbours proved to be playing in a class of their own at the Gaborone 2014 Games and left the Namibian team little chance, beating them 41:0. Namibia’s high hopes for a medal were then destroyed, when Namibia were not able to get revenge for their group match defeat against Zimbabwe and had to settle for fourth position.
The dominating South African team went on to win the African Youth Games title, beating Kenya 60:0 in the final.
"This is the first competition we have competed at with our junior sevens team and now we know what to expect and are confident that we can improve on our preparation for future competitions. The team has great talent and I’m very satisfied with their performance and fighting spirit," Namibia’s coach, Patrick Ludick, commented after the tournament.
